Firmex alternative for boutique sell side

Firmex built its name on mid market M&A. It now lives inside the Datasite family and prices by quote. Here is the honest switching math for boutique sell side firms.

Firmex is a credible mid market VDR and has been for years. Two structural things changed. Datasite acquired it in July 2021, folding it into the same family as Datasite and Ansarada, and its pricing stayed quote based, around $7,800 a year for unlimited use on average per Vendr, with per project options priced case by case.

To be clear about one thing circulating in 2026, no primary source confirms any Firmex shutdown or sunset, and this page does not claim one. Firms evaluating Firmex alternatives usually cite quote based renewals, multi deal economics, and a preference for vendors outside the consolidating Datasite family. Those are reasons enough to run the comparison.

Why firms look at Firmex alternatives

  • Quote based pricing. The renewal number is a negotiation, not a published rate. Budgeting a multi deal year means guessing.
  • Datasite family consolidation. Datasite, Firmex, and Ansarada are one house. Roadmap and pricing decisions now serve the family strategy, and the family default is enterprise economics.
  • Multi deal math. Per project pricing compounds across a 4 to 12 deal year. An unlimited flat year removes the per deal meter entirely.

Where Firmex still wins

  • Built in redaction. Firmex ships native redaction tooling. LockRoom does not have a native redaction feature today.
  • Multi language interface. Relevant for cross border processes.
  • Long institutional track record in mid market M&A and financial services.

How switching actually works

The right time to switch is between deals, not mid deal. Export your documents, drag the folder tree into a new LockRoom room (structure is preserved), invite buyer groups by email, and set permissions before anyone enters. A room is live in under 5 minutes, and the 14 day trial means you can run the evaluation on a real deal setup before paying anything.

Bottom line
Firmex remains a workable mid market VDR inside the Datasite family, and no shutdown is confirmed. The switch case is simpler than the rumors: a published flat $6,000 a year with unlimited rooms beats a ~$7,800 quote you have to renegotiate, and it is not owned by the company consolidating the category.
